In an effort to promote
our style of dance Derby City Bop Association offers a variety of
lesson formats. Beginner lessons are free and do not require
membership in Derby City Bop although membership will be encouraged
after several weeks of lesson participation. This will allow anyone
interested in learning our style of dance to determine if they are
interested in progressing before joining our club.
Free Beginner lessons
will be taught every Tuesday evening at our regularly scheduled
dance night in the front dance room at Jim Porters Good Time
Emporium. Lessons begin at 7:00 PM and usually last between 30 and
60 minutes depending upon the instructor. Beginner lessons will be
progressive meaning each week you will learn specific moves which
build upon one another. Our instructors follow a teaching guide.
Because lessons are progressive, people who fail to start the class
at the beginning of each month will be welcome to watch but must
wait for the beginning of the next monthly lesson session before
participating. Our goal is to teach the basic foot and hand
movements as well as dance etiquette to enable you to be ready to
dance with others in the ballroom. Please feel free to invite your
friends to come and be part of the beginning lessons. You will have
more fun and it will prepare you to join our club if you desire.
Free Intermediate lessons
will be taught on an alternating monthly schedule during the months
of January, March, May, July, September, and November. Intermediate
lessons are taught Tuesday evenings in the main ballroom at Jim
Porters Good Time Emporium. Lessons begin at approximately 6:30 PM.
You must be a member of Derby City Bop Association to participate in
Intermediate lessons. Intermediate lessons are stand alone lessons
and do not require that you attend each week in a progressive
format. Our goal is to teach seasoned dancers new step patterns they
may wish to incorporate into their style.
Free Line Dance lessons
will be taught during months where a Fifth Tuesday evening occurs.
This schedule occurs at different times each year so be sure to
check our dance schedule on our club calendar or just check your
regular calendar and look for months with Five Tuesday evenings. The
Fifth will always be a Line Dance lesson. You must be a member of
Derby City Bop Association to participate in our Line Dance lessons.
Lessons will begin at approximately 6:30 PM in the main ballroom at
Jim Porters Good Time Emporium.
Beginning March of 2011
Derby City Bop Association will offer Group/Progressive dance
lessons. These lessons will take place in select months on Sunday evening at
7:00
PM at Moose Lodge Number 5 located at 4615 Fegenbush Lane in the
main ballroom. Group/Progressive lessons will cost $20.00 for the
month. Each lesson will last one hour with an additional hour of
practice dancing beginning at 7:00 PM immediately following the
conclusion of the Group/Progressive lesson. Since these lessons are
progressive you must participate from the beginning of the month. If
you miss the beginning you will be required to wait until the start
of the next monthly session to participate. Our goal is to help
seasoned dancers move to the next level. As such, these lessons are
not intended for beginner dancers. The instructor will assume you
have been dancing for some time and have mastered basic dance
skills. Lessons will be announced as they are planned. Be sure to
subscribe to our email list in order to be advised when these
lessons are scheduled.
We have embedded a few
YouTube instructional videos for the popular dance styles commonly
practiced within our club below. While we do not endorse the
instructors in the videos they are examples of the various styles of
dance. After watching the videos you will be presented with
additional links of similar interest on YouTube. You can spend hours
watching videos of just about anything imaginable on YouTube so
these links should get you started understanding what our club's
dance styles are all about. Enjoy!
